I have a tendency to judge a book (or music) by its cover. I have always written off musicals and operas because I think they look boring. I can never understand opera singing and I don't have the patience to listen to it. Recently I have realized that I need to become a well-rounded person and be somewhat cultured. I have heard that the "Phantom of the Opera" is wonderful. Is it a musical or opera or play or all of the above? Anyway, it has been made into a movie and has been released on DVD.
My family and I watched the "Phantom of the Opera" yesterday on DVD. My brother was excited about watching it so that is why we rented it. He is an awesome singer and is more cultured than I. I was immediately engrossed in the plot of the story. "Who was the man and woman at the auction and why did the man buy the monkey music box?," I thought. The soundtrack was unbelievable! I recognized some of the songs but never knew that they were from the "Phantom." Some of the music really calmed me and I hadn't felt that peaceful in awhile. My mother made the same comment. ("Think of me, think of me softly")
I have got to buy the soundtrack to the movie! Either that or buy the movie. Is there a "Phantom of the Opera" book I can read? I am also wondering if the DVD version is different than the play or musical. I am starting to get obsessed. Better distract myself with some regular television.

Gaston Leroux wrote the original version that was just a book in French. I always meant to find and English version and read it but never have. I get on a kick with muscials or operas every now and then. I saw Cats because of the great songs, but it was really just bizarre on stage with good music. Glad I saw it once though. We did opera season tickets once. They have a thing like in foreign movies where they translate for you, so you know what's going on. Plus seeing them in action helps too. It's entertaining...we decided all operas involve: wine, women, mama, and knives.

Anyways, I'm glad you rented Phantom. I really enjoyed it when I watched it, too - I kind of wish I'd been able to stay and watch it a second time with you! The first time I saw it about six of "the girls" from school went to see it together. It was great. We watched the movie, then stood outside the palace for about an hour talking. Good movie, good friends, good times.
I was listening to the radio on my computer last night while studying furiously for today's final and they played two of the songs - the "Music of the Night" song and the other calming one you were talking about in your post.

You really need to talk to Mrs. Forrest. She loves musicals and has a bunch of sountracks. Phantom is a musical an not an opera. Musical's are fun with catchy songs and cool stage techniques, but they can also be more drama and serious. Les Mes is my all time favorite musical.
I'm not into opera's. I've considered watching the phantom. Have to consider again! It's always fun to get into new experiences...my favorite musical...okay, I don't usually watch them either. I did see Oklahoma at Starlight and enjoyed it. Do you watch 7th Heaven? They did a musical for this season...worst musical I've ever seen, but it made me laugh (because it was so bad) so I guess some good came from it!
West Side Story is the best musical in my book. What better story than two gangs in NY (the Jets and the Sharks) singing touching tunes that are catchy as well.
snap snap snap snap.....that's all I got from west side story before snore snore snore snore! LOL....but I know someone else who likes it...wonder if he'll own up? Or if he's not going to fuel the flame.....remember guys be nice to him, he's fixin' your food this weekend!
And one time - at band camp .....
When I was in high school band, phantom was the collest thing there was. We would throw out bits of it during football games - not that it was in the playbook; but the section leaders would write out contraband music sheets and pass them through the stands.
Santa Clara Vanguard, The quasi-professionsl marching band, played Phantom for at least 2 seasons. Their on field show included magic tricks designed by David Coperfield. The most amazing thing I ever saw on a football field was an entire band disapearing under a large flag bearing the now famous mask and a red rose. Three melodic percussionists played the remaining bars of the musc box theme from the sidelines as the drum major pulled the tarp away and walked off the field.
