lingerie shirts

The cami or the spaghetti strap shirt has been in style for awhile now. I have seen them in stores recently in multitudes. Practically the only shirt you can buy anymore is the "lingerie" shirt as I like to call it. Does is it bother anybody else that girls and women are walking around in what looks like their underwear? Putting a jacket over it maybe helps a little, but it seems very inappropriate to me. Do women wear a bra with these shirts? I am sure there are women that do not wear a bra. Some of the cami's have a shelf bra made into the shirt. Do women wear strapless bras with these shirts? To me, the only occasion on which a woman would wear a strapless bra is with a fancy strapless gown for a wedding or the prom.

I am reminded of the Seinfeld skit where Elaine is upset about a woman wearing a bra as a top. Kramer and Jerry get into an accident because they were looking at the woman wearing a bra as a shirt walking down the street. If I remember correctly, she had a jacket on but it wasn't buttoned.

It makes me sad to see women's fashion going towards provocative. Mainly because young girls want to model after them. And a lot of girls' clothing is designed after women's styles only in a smaller size.

Where does one find the balance between wanting to be fashionable yet still wanting to have a respectable wholesome image? It takes some shopping around, but there are still stylish options out there that are not slutty. I guess one should only wear what they feel comfortable in. I have never been much of a fashionable person so missing out on the lastest thing hasn't bothered me too much. I definately wouldn't want to be a teenager right now. When I was a teenager there really wasn't that many provocative clothing out there. The cool thing was long sweaters with stirrup pants.

ahhh the long sweater with stirrups! Dash recently salvaged a sweater from our good year pile that was my "long sweater" from High school. I got rid of most of my old stuff, but had "givers remorse" with that one. I wore it a lot and it's the only thing I have left that my gma gave me before she lost her ability to give willingly.

The five year old I babysit for wore a lace top like this to school on her first day. I hope this style changes fast. At least N knows we won't let her dress that way, so she sticks to clothes that have sleeves and cover her waist! We manage to still find her cute girl clothes that are modest. Like you said it can be done...if you want to find them.

Some of these tops do have built in bras, but the women I know that wear the ones that don't...do not wear a bra with them. This is usually obvious. dash should comment to this blog, he's got a lot to say on the subject!

So I guess I should erase the cami top from your Christmas list? :)

I don't mind the tank top ones so much but the ones that actually look like lingerie complete with lace drive me crazy. I mean that is bed/under wear. I have found some tank/spaghetti straps that have a real bra in them. They are hard to find and I bought a couple, but mostly wear them for walks and yard work. It be hard to have a teenager right now. And can I add on this point - there are a lot of midrifs showing these days that are unattractive and have no business showing!? Over here, it is in style to show bra straps with the tank tops. I see this even in church.

yeah, the bra strap thing is in here too....even with the built in ones they are made with 2 straps. My mom always said that wasn't proper, I guess it's okay now!

I'm not sure what tops you are talking about, but I would rather see them than the long sweaters and stir-ups. Those were horrid!

Did you say "Shelf Bra"? :)

Are you all talking about something that looks like a tank top? I think the ones with lace look real nice. It gives it some added texture. I am thinking of the kind they sell at anthropology. But I don't know if we are talking about the same thing, because I haven't seen anybody walking around in lingerie.

I am mostly talking about the silk or satin spaghetti strap tops with lace on the front. It looks like lingerie.

Long sweaters and stirrups are horrid now when you look back at it. At the time they were considered stylish. In 10-20 years, people are going to look back at the lace cami and say that is horrid. I brought the stirrup pant thing up to point out that clothes were somewhat more conservative back then.

I have conservative views on clothing. If it looks like underwear, it should be worn underneath clothing, not as a shirt. Call me old-fashioned. : )

I need to see an example of what you are talking about to know if it is the same thing I am thinking of. Can you wear something like that on Wednesday night?

The shirts I am thinking of have a real feminine quality to them -sexiness- as some might say. and I don't mean what they do to the female body-that's trashy, but the actual garment being sexy or feminine.

So many of women's clothes in the past have had a unisex quality to them, but lately it seems like they are concentrating on making clothes more feminine.

I love my wife to look attractive and feminine and sexy and certain clothes can inhance her natural beauty that makes a statement that says "hey, your with a real feminine sexy woman." and I just can't take my eyes off of her.

I think a lot of christian women think that sexiness is bad, but I think a lot of christian husbands need it.

Holy Cow Forrest. I was going to make a funny comment and you swapped the hornet's nest on that one! First my comment. I saw a new anchor wearing one of those lingerie shirts under a suit coat. It was sexy, but looked like she was sitting on the bed of her CEO boyfriend and decided to report a few stories. As for conservative fashion. I notice that if a denomination eschews dancing and drinking, the hair seems to become bigger and is always off the neck - for guys and gals. But, I holiness girl look: long denim skirt with white sneakers, long hair flowing all natural like in the breeze... WHOOOOOWEEEEE!!!

Forrest, Sexiness isn't bad, but it is for one's spouse only. Of course you want your wife to look good. Everyone draws the line differently to what is modest and acceptable in public and what is not.

This might just be one of my scruples. I was thinking about that since we talked about it in Sunday School. My faith doesn't allow me to wear a sexy lace cami top in public. I am not going to judge any women that does wear one in public. Other women's faith may let them wear such clothes.

I like buildings that are sexy!
My ipod is sexy!

In the design world we tend to use the attribute of sexiness when it applies.

Watching a lot of fashion shows it is interesting to hear designers talk about what makes something sexy vs. trashy slutty. Sexy seems to go with the right lines and cuts with ones natural body shape and bringing out the best of that body. Trashy seems as clothing that is promoting sex and lust.

Let's take this lacy top for example. Maybe by wearing it with no bra looks trashy, but maybe if you wear a fitted jacket on top of it - it now looks sexy!

I bet vernal would have some clever comment if she read this.

I was recently given a tank top that had the "bra" built into it, but it did have the double straps on it. My first comment was why did they make it LOOK that way on purpose. I have always read/heard that if wearing a tank top, DO NOT have bra straps showing. I do have a couple of these cotton tank tops that are great for lounging around the house/doing housework. OR walking around in the hospital...LOL! And, YES, I was more decent in that tank top than a hospital gown!!!! =D

about straps...
I know most people grew up with one strap on each side, but maybe the new tops that have two straps because it is a design decision.

We do this sometimes in architecture. Take a structural column for example, one that is exposed as an architectural element. One big column can be designed to carry the necessary load or we can use two or four smaller and more slender columns to carry the same load. It's a different look one of lightness vs. heaviness.

Another example maybe more appropriate to the bra would be Bartle Hall. It has that cantilever load (breasts) that needs to be supported and instead of one giant strap they use a lot of tiny cables that give it a pattern design.

The end that hangs over I-70 just looks trashy to me...
